What is the best birdseed to attract a variety of birds?
All types of birdseed attract a variety of birds. A good rule of thumb is the smaller the seed, the smaller the birds. Thistle seed will attract goldfinches and nuthatches. Bluebird nuggets and nuts will attract bluebirds, woodpeckers and owls.
In addition to seed, having a water source and hiding places will also help attract more birds. All birds want the same three things: food, water, and a place to hide from predators. Providing all three will give you the best chances of attracting a wide variety of birds.
Do you have squirrel or bear proof feeders?
Unfortunately, no feeder is going to be completely squirrel proof, and definitely not bear proof. Some feeders, like the Droll Yankee feeders, have squirrel deterrent features. The best way to prevent bears from getting your feeders is to bring the feeders inside at night.
When do the hummingbirds come out?
Hummingbirds typically begin to appear in late spring.
Are hummingbirds really attracted to red?
Yes! But they are also attracted to blues, purples and yellows. Having a colorful flower garden is a great way to increase the number of hummingbirds at your feeder but be forewarned! Hummingbirds are very territorial. Make sure you have one feeder for every 4-5 birds.
Why aren’t birds coming to my feeder?
There could be a variety of reasons, depending on the type of feeder. Seed feeders get dirty quickly and can easily spread sickness like bird flu. Make sure you clean your seed feeders at least once per week. For hummingbird feeders, your nectar could be old and/or fermented. Change the nectar at least every other day during the hottest weeks of summer and keep the feeder ports clean.
